- 12:00 AM23h 55mTe Moana Meridian: How The Prime Meridian Shapes The World And The Case For Relocating ItSam Hamilton/Sam Tam Ham (b. 1984, Auckland, New Zealand/Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa) created Te Moana Meridian as a vessel for proposing a radical new United Nations General Assembly Draft Resolution to formally relocate the prime meridian from Greenwich, London, to Te Moana-Nui-ā-Kiwa/the South Pacific Ocean. Since its inception at an 1884 conference in Washington D.C., the prime meridian has functioned to implicitly serve the ambitions of the British colonial empire. Rather than serving as a "beacon of humanity," the prime meridian today more resembles a bygone imperial relic. As an original operatic performance and five-channel video installation, Te Moana Meridian proposes to elect a new "center of the world" while acknowledging that doing so has the potential to reframe the dynamics of global power. --- Event Details: https://bullsconnect.usf.edu/rsvp?id=1984384

Maguire’s paintings are global in scope and are derived from projects undertaken between 2007 and 2024 in Mexico, the Mediterranean, Syria, Sudan, the United States, and the Amazon. Maguire's artworks are painted from direct experience and involve the artist spending extensive time on the ground with the communities that welcome him. - 1:00 PM1h 30mMath Club Directed ActivityThis activity session is the first in a series of guided exercise sessions planned for the math club. The aim of these sessions is to have graduate students or professors guide the participants in rediscovering an important mathematical concept by asking guiding questions and leading them in the right direction. This first session will be a prototype of this concept, and as such, please feel free to leave comments and criticisms. In this first session, we aim to teach everyone in the audience, regardless of your background knowledge, something new about the fundamental group of a topological space. No prerequisites are required, since what you learn by the end of the session will be simply dependent on what knowledge you started with: - If you have no knowledge in group theory or topology, we can hope to achieve good intuition and development of concept by the end of the session without referring to any technical jargon. - If you know some basic topological notions and group theory, we can hope to achieve the complete construction of the fundamental group. - If you are already familiar with the construction of the fundamental group, we can hope to prove or discuss some deeper theorems surrounding the fundamental group such as its functorality or the "Galois" correspondence between covering spaces and fundamental subgroups.BUT AGAIN, to prepare for the session, participants don’t need to learn anything new. Just brush up on what you already know, and get ready for an exciting guided exercise session!Note: This first session might take longer than a day, in which case we can continue on the next free math club day.Session led by: Panith Thiruvenkatasamy and Clàudia Sallés. --- Event Details: https://bullsconnect.usf.edu/rsvp?id=1991125
